THE MAYPOLE | Photographs set around a Maypole located in the North Yorkshire village of Slingsby.

Maypoles were traced to prehistoric times when the Tree Spirit was worshipped (Sir James George Frazer in his book โ€˜The Golden Boughโ€˜). People danced around the poles but did not plait them.

Today, the tradition is still observed in some parts of Europe and among European communities in North America.

Maypole History

The Maypole tradition hasn’t always met with approval.

The Long Parliament’s ordinance of 1644 described maypoles as “a Heathenish vanity, generally abused to superstition and wickedness.”

When Charles II took the throne in 1660 Maypole dancing came back after the crackdown during the Cromwell era.

Slingsby’s maypole history goes back a great many years. The current Slingsby Maypole was erected in 1993. It is used each year for village May Day celebrations attracting big crowds.

A YouTube video of the 1985 Maypole raising can be found on the Slingsby village website.

The Speedway Meet | Documentary photography

Speedway is a sport which has a massive following but is run on budgets far lower than other motorsports.

One of the most popular sports of the 1950s. Speedway was even watched at Wembley Stadium before the sport started to decline in the late 1960s.

By the 1970s and 1980s, many teams faced closure as stadium land was sold for redevelopment.

The Team

Wolverhampton’s team is regarded as one of the most successful teams of the last 20 years; being both successful in the sport and financially secure in an era when many teams face closure.

The images were taken at a Wolverhampton vs Poole meeting.

These images were taken using a Nikon F3HP fitted with an MD4 motor drive on Kodak TMAX 400 and Ilford HP5 film.

Photography Prints

The photographs of the speedway bikes are some of my best selling images.
