The Speedway Meet | Documentary photography project about the sport of Speedway

Speedway is a sport which has a massive following but is run on budgets far lower than other motorsports. One of the most popular sports of the 1950’s, Speedway was even watched at Wembley Stadium before the sport started to decline in the late 1960’s.

By the 1970’s and 1980’s many teams faced closure as stadium land was sold for redevelopment. Wolverhampton’s team is regarded as one of the most successful teams of the last 20 years; being both successful in the sport and financially secure in an era when many teams face closure.

The images were taken at a Wolverhampton vs Poole meeting. These images were taken using a Nikon F3HP fitted with an MD4 motordrive on Kodak TMAX 400 and Ilford HP5 film.

The photographs of the speedway bikes capturing the energy of a speedway start, bikes charging away from the line, are some of my best selling images.
