The Delicate Image

Family albums are remarkable documents that sadly seem to dying out due to the social networks. Why keep the images in a book where the rest of the family can’t see them, when you can upload them to Facebook?

Recently i was able to look through a beautifully ornate and fascinating family album, bought to me by a client who wanted to have a number of the images copied and repaired.

It was obvious that the album was old just from looking at it, but after a bit of research i realised that the images dated form well before the first world war. The fascinating detail of what i found out can be read here.

Photographs are very delicate documents. Water, smoke and especially strong light can cause an immense amount of damage to a photograph. Sometimes that damage can be fatal, although it can be surprising how much detail remains even in the most faded photograph.

The photo restoration service extends the lifespan of an original photograph. See the old original photo as being  like a negative. The original can be placed safely away, away from the elements that would harm it, and the new one displayed for all to see.

Book Beginnings

Last year i released my first photography book in the shape of Sea, Sky, Sand and Street, a collection of images taken around Norfolk over a sixteen day period. Very soon, work will begin on my second book based around photographs taken around the Highlands of Scotland.

Much of the detail for this year’s book still has be worked out, but i have figured out that the book will be in a landscape format, making it a larger book than the last one (i intend to build up to the large landscape format in 2013), with the book measuring 25×20 cm (10×8) – rather a nice size to work with.

The photography for the book will be shot in colour and a release date for the finished book will be around late October.

The finished book will be available to purchase via Blurb in a variety of formats from softcover through to an iPad edition. Keep an eye on the news section for more updates soon.

The Maypole

THE MAYPOLE | Photographs set around a Maypole located in the North Yorkshire village of Slingsby.

Maypoles were traced to prehistoric times when the Tree Spirit was worshipped (Sir James George Frazer in his book ‘The Golden Bough‘). People danced around the poles but did not plait them.

Today, the tradition is still observed in some parts of Europe and among European communities in North America.

Maypole History

The Maypole tradition hasn’t always met with approval.

The Long Parliament’s ordinance of 1644 described maypoles as “a Heathenish vanity, generally abused to superstition and wickedness.”

When Charles II took the throne in 1660 Maypole dancing came back after the crackdown during the Cromwell era.

Slingsby’s maypole history goes back a great many years. The current Slingsby Maypole was erected in 1993. It is used each year for village May Day celebrations attracting big crowds.

A YouTube video of the 1985 Maypole raising can be found on the Slingsby village website.
