SCOTLAND: Lowlands, Highlands and Islands | Landscape and Documentary Photography

This landscape and documentary photography project follows a number of locations and routes through Scotland. The area covers runs from the borders through to the highlands and the Hebrides.

The first trip created a relationship with Scotland that will last all my life. The diversity and beauty of the country never fail to amaze me. I feel so at home when I’m amongst the mountains and lochs of the Highlands.

Much like the Norfolk project, this is a photography project with no end date. I imagine that it will be a ‘work in progress’ until the time I can no longer physically continue to take images.

Highlands and Skye

The scope of photography is huge. So far the images cover mostly a narrow area of the Highlands and Skye, but the plan is to add more areas in the future.

Fortunately, the Scottish Borders are around an hour’s drive from where I live. The opportunity to regularly continue photography in southern Scotland is there.

The northern areas also include plenty of potential too. The Outer Hebrides is one area of interest for future project development. It’s going to be a great project to contribute to over the coming years.

The photography comes from a mix of mediums including mobile photography. Instagram has been especially useful for showing images as journeys have progressed. The Two Towns and Seven Hills photography are offshoots of this project looking at the city of Edinburgh.

Future plans include the development of a number of photography books, large format photography, multimedia and more.

Photography Book

Work is currently well under-way on the first photography book. This will bring together photography from four trips to the Highlands of Scotland and Skye.

Sea, Sky, Sand and Street

Sea, Sky, Sand and Street | Landscape and Street Photography Book

Originally created as a PDF book, for an online photo project, this gallery features an extended gallery of 115 images shot for the Sea, Sky, Sand and Street iPhone photography book released in the summer of 2011.

This extended gallery contains photographs not featured in the book, edited down from the 400 images taken for the project using an iPhone. The images are shown in the order they were shot. Using landscape, still-life and street photography, Sea, Sky, Sand and Street features a variety of rural, urban and coastal locations along the north Norfolk coast.

A big influence on the project was John Tordai’s excellent 1993 photography book that documented the northern English county of Northumberland.

iPhone Photography

The project was really the first true test of mobile photography as a photographer. It confirmed to me that mobile photography had a future and was a useful tool for photographers. It also captured quite brilliantly, although I didn’t realise it at the time, a specific period of my life.

Places change and we change too. Often quicker than we’d like to think. I will return to Norfolk at some point, but it won’t ever be quite the same as before.

Two Books

The photography was used in two books. The first was a PDF photo book for the Solo Photo Book Month project in 2011. Participants had to shoot, edit and design a PDF photo book in 31 days. Sand, Sky, Sea and Street was the final book I produced for the Solo Photo Book Month project.

Sadly the popular bookmaking project closed in 2011 due to rising running costs. The PDF book would lead onto the 2011 print version with the slightly altered title of Sea, Sky, Sand and Street.

The PDF books from the Solo Photo Book Month projects are located HERE.

The Printed Book

The 80 page print version ‘Sea, Sky, Sand and Street’ book featuring 70 black and white landscape, documentary and still life photographs can be purchased from Blurb HERE.

Sea, Sky, Sand and Street Prints

A collection of 25 images, taken from the ‘Sea, Sky, Sand and Street’ book, are available to buy as professional quality prints via the Richard Flint Photography Redbubble store.

Ready to display easily, the prints are available as 4×4″ (10×10 cm) and 6×6″ (15×15 cm) acrylic blocks. Also available are professionally printed watercolour textured 4ply artboards in a variety of sizes from 6×6 (15.2×15.2 cm) to 10×10 (25.4 x 25.4 cm).

Making Movies | Documentary Photography

Making Movies follows the production of a film in Whitby using an iPhone. Sadly the production ran into difficulties – film making is not an easy business – however, the photographs are shown here where shot in the early stages of filming from June 7th to late July 2010.

The Polaroid-style images were made went into the second book I made for the 2010 Solo Photo Book Month project. Solo Photo Book Month was an online photographic project (sadly the project closed in 2011) where the participants had to shoot, edit and design a PDF photo book in 31 days.

An extended PDF book can be downloaded from the HERE featuring more images from the project.

The other PDF books from the Solo Photo Book Month projects are located in the photobooks section of the website.

Walled City: Photographs of York

Walled City: Photographs of York | Documentary Photography

Walled City: Photographs of York was a PDF book released for the Solo Photo Book Month project of 2009.

Solo Photo Book Month was an online photographic project (sadly the project closed in 2011) where the participants had to shoot, edit and design a PDF photo book in 31 days.

The photographs seen in the gallery were taken as part of the 2009 book project, the first of three books I would make for the project, based around the medieval city walls of York.

Views from the Wall

One of the best ways of viewing the city is from the 2.5 miles of a stone wall that look down onto the streets. The project’s aim was to capture the day-to-day activity in the city from the unique viewpoint/location of the city walls.

The book contained a collection of photographs taken from the viewpoint of, or immediately near to, the medieval city walls located in the centre of York.

More images from this project can be found in the PDF book HERE.

The other PDF books from the Solo Photo Book Month projects are located in the photobooks section of the website.
